Boasting superb sound quality (by 1970s standards), Secret Heart Illustrated documents an August 3, 1976, gig at a club near Chicago called the Night Gallery. At that point, Heart hadn't started headlining large sports arenas, but its following was growing rapidly and there was every reason to believe that Dreamboat Annie was going to make the band huge (which, of course, it did). The Wilson sisters' excellent set ranges from three Dreamboat Annie gems ("Magic Man," "Crazy on You," and "White Lightning and Wine") and two songs that ended up on Magazine ("Devil Delight" and "Heartless") to three Led Zeppelin covers: "Rock & Roll," "The Rover," and "The Battle of Evermore." Heart made no secret of its love of Zeppelin there was a lot of Robert Plant influence in Ann Wilson's vocals, and Jimmy Page had a major influence on Nancy Wilson's playing. Nonetheless, the very fresh-sounding Dreamboat Annie made it clear that Heart had a distinctive sound of its own. Unfortunately for Heart fans, Secret Heart Illustrated wasn't around for very long; copies went quickly, and by 1979 the bootleg became increasingly difficult to find. Alex Henderson
